In order to promote and encourage parents to read regularly with young children, we have begun participating in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Children who have not yet begun Kindergarten are encouraged to participate in this program at all Dearborn Library locations. Here’s how you do it:
How to participate?
Visit any Dearborn Public Library to receive the 1,000 Books program guide. We ask that at least one person connected with the young child have a Dearborn Public Library Card. You can keep track of progress using the program guide or you can download the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten app for Android or Apple devices.
Read books and enjoy the process. Keep it fun and don’t give up. As your child reads, a small reward will be given with each 100 books read. The larger milestones – 500 and 1000 books – will be rewarded with bigger prizes. Don’t forget to check in with the library from time to time to receive your rewards and pick up some new books. We are happy to help you find age appropriate books or make suggestions based on your likes or dislikes. It’s what we do best!
Persistence is key. Start by including books in your daily routine. Don’t forget to note some of your favorites. You can count multiple readings – don’t we all love re-reading a great book?!
