Library Update 10/16/20

Dearborn Public Library slowly reopening

We are pleased to announce that on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 the Henry Ford Centennial Library (HFCL) will move directly from Phase 2 into Phase 4 of our reopening plan. The Bryant and Esper Branch libraries will remain in Phase 2 (Curbside Pickup only) for a few weeks longer.

Reopening Plan

Phase 4 at HFCL:

  • Patrons will be allowed to enter HFCL through the south entrance and remain in the building for one hour. Only the second floor will be open to the public.
  • Upon entrance, patrons will be greeted at the Welcome Desk in order to complete a health screening form and temperature check.
  • Masks, which cover the nose and mouth, must be worn at all times. Vented masks are not acceptable.
  • Patrons not belonging to the same household should remain six (6) feet apart at all times. Family groups visiting should consist of no more than three (3) persons.
  • Patrons may browse the shelves, checkout library material, or use a public computer (the number of available computers is very limited).
  • At this time, HFCL hours will be as follows:
    • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.
    • Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
    • Closed Mondays, Fridays and Sundays
  • We will continue to offer Curbside Pickup for those who prefer not to enter the building.
  • We ask that patrons continue to return all material to the outside drop box so that we can easily quarantine the material.

Branch libraries will remain in Phase 2 which is Curbside Pickup only. Click here for more information regarding Curbside Pickup.

All MeLCat requested material will be available for pickup at the Henry Ford Centennial Library (HFCL) either through an in-person visit or through Curbside Pickup. Please continue to return all MeLCat material to the drop box at HFCL. For additional information, visit MeL.org or contact MeLCat Services at iloan@ci.dearborn.mi.us.

Our new service, Shelf Help, will match library users to materials (books, audiobooks, DVDs and Music CDs) based on a variety of preferences chosen, such as genre, interests, author and format. This service is open to library users of all ages.

To get started, fill out the Shelf Help questionnaire on the library’s website. Librarians will place up to 10 items on hold per library account. Once materials are ready (this may take 1-3 business days depending upon availability), library users will be contacted by email or phone. You may then pick up materials curbside at all three library locations or inside the Henry Ford Centennial Library at the Circulation Desk.

We encourage our patrons to continue to use our digital media services as well as our online resources.

We are excited to welcome our patrons back to HFCL and hope to move the branch libraries to Phase 3, and then Phase 4 when possible.

In order for us to continue offering library services, we ask all of our patrons to wear appropriate masks, to limit their visit to one hour, and to follow our established safety protocols. This will keep all of us safe and keep the library open.

Please remember that library services are subject to change, based on health and safety conditions and state mandates.
