History

Located in the heart of Dearborn’s Arab community, the library originally opened in 1953 as the Warren Branch.  In 1961 it was renamed to honor Anthony M. Esper, a former Treasurer of Springwells Township (the name of this section of Dearborn until 1929), a Dearborn City Councilman of 37 years, and a descendant of one of Dearborn’s pioneer families. In fact, the land on which Esper Branch Library sits was once part of an eighty acre plot owned by the Esper family.

Esper Branch underwent an extensive renovation beginning in 1999, and in 2001 a thoroughly modernized building reopened. The current library is more than double the size of the old building, and provides patrons with a variety of study areas, a community meeting room and improved parking. The library also has a large number of public Internet stations, CD and DVD collections, and special collections of Arabic language books, magazines and DVDs.
