What is the SparkLab?

The SparkLab is a collaborative space where makers, learners, creators and innovators of all ages may come to work on projects and use equipment provided by the library.  The SparkLab inspires hands-on and social learning about new techniques and technologies.  SparkLab materials and equipment are free to use during Dearborn Public Library-sponsored programs. Patrons using the lab on their own are required to incur nominal material fees or supply their own materials.

How do I use the SparkLab?

Full-service Dearborn Library Cardholders may use the SparkLab during open hours after they have:

  • Patrons over 18 – Filled out and signed SparkLab Maker Agreement, have watched the safety training video and taken the post-video quiz.
  • Patrons between 13 and 17 years old – SparkLab Maker Agreement signed by a parent/guardian, and the teen has watched the safety training video and taken the post-video quiz.  Teens may work independently.
  • Patrons under 13 years old – Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Parent/guardian must fill out and sign the SparkLab Maker Agreement, watch the safety training video and take the post-video quiz.

Please keep in mind that the SparkLab contains sharp tools and delicate equipment.  Young children need to sit and remain focused on an activity. They cannot run or wander aimlessly around the SparkLab.

How can I reserve equipment?

Please check the calendar for reservations.  SparkLab equipment can be reserved here. Please allow 48 hours for a reservation to be completed.  Walk-in use can be done with less than 48 hours’ notice, if the equipment is not already reserved or in use.  You will receive a confirmation email when your reservation is complete.  You must have a signed SparkLab Maker Agreement and have completed the safety training quiz and equipment introduction before reserving equipment.

Policy

The Dearborn Library SparkLab facilitates the use of many types of equipment and training.  Please be familiar with policy regarding the SparkLab:

How do I get Supplies?

Materials for Library-sponsored programs are provided for free, unless otherwise noted.  There are a limited number of SparkKits available for use in the SparkLab.  These kits are meant as introductory projects focusing on various crafting techniques.  All materials needed are supplied in the SparkKits.  The Dearborn Public Library does sell a limited amount of supplies.  Please see the SparkLab Pricing table for those costs.  Patrons must supply all other materials for projects.  These materials may be purchased at home improvement or hardware stores, craft stores or online.  Some materials may need SparkLab staff approval before they can be used on SparkLab equipment.  Please look at specific equipment information (choose an equipment color level above) or contact the SparkLab at dearbornsparklab@gmail.com
