The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the single largest source of federal funding for libraries, and makes up substantial portion of each state library agency’s funding, including Michigan’s.
Executive Order 14238 (March 14, 2025) calls for the elimination of the IMLS, which could impact funding of the interlibrary loan program.
If funding for the interlibrary loan program is impacted, library patrons’ access to the statewide catalog and delivery system could be affected, and patrons could lose access to materials from over 450 libraries across the state.
See the official statement on the issue from the State of Michigan Department of Education.
